Heh,

I don't think that you should worry about it. And neither should I
because UARS flies only above "inhabited areas" - Finland isn't one. Razz

At the moment the Aerospace Corporation predicts that it will fall into
Pacific Ocean:

http://reentrynews.aero.org/1991063b.html

But note what they say:

Predicted Reentry Time: 23 SEP 2011 @ 20:00 UTC ± 14 hours

"± 14 hours" - in 14 hours UARS will go around Earth 9 times.

Yes,

and that makes it worse. Instead of one solid object we
are going to see many little fragments. Let's say that
99% of the satellite burns and only 1% (= 60 kg) of it
actually falls to the ground. The 1% will most likely consist
of hundreds of small pieces which will scatter to a very big
area. ("NASA estimates the debris footprint will be about
500 miles long.")

I don't understand how NASA can calculate any chances
when nobody is sure what will actually happen when the
satellite enters the atmosphere. The more fragments we
see the more dangerous it is because basically it doesn't
make any difference to you if you are hit to head by a 6
ton object or a 400 gram object.

Well there's about 1:2000 chance that it will actually hit a person, and then there's about 1:7bil chance that it will be you Wink

Im going to jinx it... lol!

Yeah, I will have faith in what NASA say and hope that Honter is right.

A satellite called UARS will fall down probably this week.
We are talking about a 6 ton bus sized object that orbits
Earth at 200 km altitude (about 130 miles). Because the
orbit is so low the satellite has high speed (7.5 km/s or
4.6 miles/s means it makes one full round around Earth
in 91 mins). That's why it is hard to predict where it will
fall.

NASA's page about UARS:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/uars/index.html

Real time tracking of UARS:

http://www.n2yo.com/?s=21701 (page is slow, wait)
