I have a mod friend who sat outside of rc shop in varrock. He set up a cannon at the door, and you could tell whoever was botting because they got stuck inside. Very Happy Also, at green dragons you can tell also because if there are a group of them they dress EXACTLY the same ( I once saw 4 guys 1 girl all dressed in granite plate dragon skirt, etc) and i tried spam trading all of them and no reply Rolling Eyes

A reset is purposeless if you are going to ban the account anyway.
The best (and only) explanation I have so far found is:

Bans are issued as soon as the case is clear. If the account
is a member then the ban can happen anywhere in the
30 day paying period. Maybe they are afraid that someone
sues them because they don't reimburse the membership
fee for the remaining days.

If they just reset the botted accounts then they don't need
to worry about claims of not honouring their terms of contract
(ie. providing a months play)

Yes, that's why I wrote "simplified description".

But your example about vinesweeper has actually happened.
A girl collected points until she could get 99 in one go. And
Jagex banned her - at least for a while.

Deps wrote:
But how can they find out how long or when did you bot?
I assume that they are using the old versions of the stats
database. Here is a simplified description:

A database that contains

1) User ID as a 32-bit unsigned integer (4 bytes)
2) Exp in all 25 skills each 32-bit (25 x 4 bytes) *

requires only 104 bytes per account. If we multiply it with
the amount of accounts, for example 14m **, then we will
have a database that is about 1.5 gigabytes. Using a
modern disk storage system they can easily have all
the old database versions online at the same time.

So they have a script comparing a database dated 5/28/2010
and a database dated 5/29/2010. If the script finds out that
your exp has increased in a day more than "an allowed
amount" then the script will mark that exp as "botted". This
is what happened to the guy whose post at the RSOF I linked.
He got his stats reduced even if he already had been temp
banned for botting.

* Note that max exp is 200m and a 28-bit unsigned integer
can go up to 268,435,455 but exp is counted using one decimal
so they are probably using the extra 4 bits for the decimals.

** Probably most of the accounts have so low stats that
they are not worth checking - I believe that about 4m is
a correct number.

I have now enough evidence that I'm sure Jagex has
a new anti-bot system that resets account stats.

http://services.runescape.com/m=forum/forums.ws?15,16,710,61913623

They did this somewhere during the RSC era, but it
was probably a manual system back then.

I still don't know how it works because what happened
was a bit wierd:

- one day many people lost their stats
- those who posted to forums about it were told to make a bug report
- many of those who posted are not in the hiscores any more
- Jagex (actually a JMod) claimed that botters are banned, not resetted

It's like they are testing the system because there was one
burst of posts at the RSOF, then nothing and then more posts.
But what is the purpose of this system? Was botting so common
that Jagex is afraid of the impact on their income?*

* Yes, that can happen. The familiar-PvP-f2p glitch was so widely
abused that Jagex couldn't issue bans to all abusers. As far as I
know only one account was banned.

Finnish Runescape community has a bot hunting event.

http://services.runescape.com/m=forum/sl=4/forums.ws?106,107,182,61697416

Suuri = big, jahti = hunt

In his message Mod Hiisi tells that this is an exceptional event
because usually these events are held only for player moderators.
The events are not public because botters might stop botting if
they know that there will be a bot hunting event. He also does
not reveal before the event where they are going to check for bots
(but you can easily guess that based on the quest and item
requirements).

Hiisi states that this event will be public because they want
to assure normal players that Jagex is aware of the problem
and they are actively doing something about it.

Oh I'm sure it's an unexpected side benefit; I just hope they picked up on it fast enough to use it to BAN people Neutral

Oh, I can understand that. When you have botted successfully a lot
of exp it is unlikely that you will start normal skilling.

Yeah, I feel a little sorry for Jagex because fighting bots is a mission impossible.
However Jagex cannot admit that they are powerless because that would be like
a permit to bot. That's why no jmods will speak about bots - the whole issue is
a taboo to them. Razz

Too bad we can't have something like Turing test* in Runescape. Why? Because
too many players would fail it. Twisted Evil

Bots / Bug Abusers are the worst offences after In Real Life Threats.

They are probably the hardest to stop but easiest to find. Stupid bots Sad...why can't they just go away >.<
