LAST EDITED: Wednesday 7/14: Fly fishing (and cooking fish in between) definitely seems to be best method. Tuna/swordfish not so good because there's no exp for 2nd tuna/swordfish if you catch 2, and it slows down cooking. Added new post about fly fishing procedure and rates.

Fishing and Cooking have been drawn as the buddy skills. This thread is to figure out which method(s) would give the best exp rate for both skills. Hopefully, high exp rates shouldn't be too hard to achieve (or at least not require much concentration to achieve), since cooking has the cook-X option and fishing rates shouldn't vary too much.

IMPORTANT: Raw fish and logs cannot be traded, banked, or dropped during these sessions. That pretty much means you have to cook your fish and then get rid of them.

When fly fishing, there is a chance of getting a fish every 3 seconds (5 game ticks)
The delay between continously trout/salmon is 2.4 seconds, although it shouldn't matter if you cook in between the chances of getting fish.

It's much easier and quicker to cook if you only have one of the fish (so the cook-X menu doesn't show up).

Post your ideas, methods, suggestions, etc here.

Yes, the fisher needs a firemaker.

Other important things:

- this is not 5 * 1 hour but 4 * 2 hours
- it seems that cooking gauntlets are allowed

Because the sessions are that long they should be done together so that one firemaker can support several fishers.

Fly Fishing Procedure:

Inv: Fly fishing rod and 2-2.5k feathers (or more)

There is a chance of catching a fish every 3 seconds; that means your character is doing nothing the rest of the time. To maximize exp, it seems best to cook in between those chances of getting fish.

In order for this to work, a person is needed to make fires, and possibly to receive and drop/bank cooked fish (can be same person). It might also help if the trader has some admiral pies in the bank/inv.

Basically, for the fisher, as soon as you catch a fish, click on it, use on fire (which should be 1 square away from you, and shouldn't have anyone on it), and click back on the fishing spot. This has to be done in about 2 seconds, which I think is enough time.

If you have a timer, you could do this without a dropper, but you'd still need someone to make fires. If you get a fish, then cook it; if you don't then you have 2 secs to drop 1-3 cooked fish. Make sure you don't accidentally drop raw ones. The timer helps keep track of the approx 3-second intervals when you have a chance of getting fish.

If you mess up, misclick, etc, make sure you do not drop any raw fish. Cook any that you have, and continue fishing.

Possible spots: Atm, i'm not sure which spot would be best.
- Shilo Village: close to bank, but no trees nearby, and fishing spots move rather far away
- Barbarian Village: farther from bank, but has trees and fish spots don't move too far; more crowded though
- North of seers - need to check this
- Ardougne river - need to check this
- Lumbridge river - has trees, shouldn't be crowded, somewhat far from bank

Summoning Familiars:
- Granite Crab (16 summon) - +1 invisible boost, lasts 18 min, forages raw fish
- Ibis (56 summon) - +3 invisible boost, lasts 38 min, forages raw fish
- Granite Lobster (74 summon) - +4 invisible boost, lasts 47 min, forages raw fish

Data

At lvl 80 fishing, I caught 600 trout/salmon out of 820 tries (give or take a few), which is a probability of .7317 (to 4 decimal places).

So basically, there's a 70-75% percent chance of getting a fish every 3.03 secs.

Percent of trout: 54.4%
Percent of salmon: 45.6%

So, average exp per fish caught will be about 59 and average exp per fish cooked will be 79 over the long run.

Using this data, the maximum projected exp for 2 hours is slightly over 240k exp combined for fishing and cooking. Of course, that's assuming absolutely no misclicks or other problems. I would say 180k-200k exp per 2 hrs shouldn't be too hard, but this is just an estimate.

Please note that this data is for lvl 80 fishing.

Btw, if anyone with 99 fishing could get some data for fly fishing, that would be helpful (maybe 90 and 70 fish too). To get data, start a timer when your character casts out the rod, and stop when your inventory fills up with fish. Record those times for at least 10 inventories. If a fish spot moves during an inventory, don't count it.

Thanks Sd Very Happy Now we have an estimate about the exp.

That said, we will absolutely not require anyone to click every
third second for several hours (ok, if Quake was here he'd do it Twisted Evil ).
We do this for fun so I was planning it more like a clan event:

- several fishers, firemakers and droppers/bankers go to a fishing spot
- we chill there two hours (clicking every 3rd second makes chatting hard :geek: )
